This game had it's time. I remember when i first played this game in my friend's console years ago. It actually a quite interesting game. But unfortunately, this version is really horrible! The game is buggy and almost unplayable. Perhaps if you play it on an older system, this game will run perfectly. Obviously not worth a full price. Can't help it but i must give a negative review to this game.. If you are into detective stories and occult, this adventure game is really a good one. It requires a brain and expects quite a lot from the player. It's nice not to be considered an idiot by a game for a change. It has a good atmosphere too. Very, very nice and creepy. The story telling is quite rich and requires to pay attention. On the other hand, the user interface could have been better. Character interaction is also a weakness of this game and it isn't entirely bug free either. Many nice puzzles, one of them excessively frustrating though. Overall, for the money spent I had a hell lot of fun. And I felt like just having finished reading a novel afterwards. Good stuff.. A mediocre old detective adventure. I couldn't bother finishing it.Pros:+ Atmospheric ambient sounds and music+ Some conversations are interestingCons:- Very aged graphics with weird character animations- Cumbersome journal and dialogue logs- Gore- Unnecessarily complicated puzzles (even with a walkthrough some took AGES)- Somewhat confusing, and not really interesting story. Even with the plot twists, it just didn't pull me in.. why do I play this game if I don't reccomend it? the story and thats IT. some of the puzzles are impossible or just plain guess work. The story, the characters and their voice acting, and the scenarios are all very good but in all honesty thats ALL.. I'll start off by saying that I can't believe I used 9 hours of my life playing this.As someone who likes both detective stories and point&click-games, I delved into the story with optimism, which soon changed into frustration and downright annoyance. By the end of the game I was hoping for the characters to shut up with their dialogue already so I can get the hell out.To make it simple, here's a little list:- The whole atmosphere of the game was bleak, dull and unappealing. Even the cutscenes, which were meant to be dynamic, only managed to make me feel like playing tetris to get any action.- I don't know which accent half the cast were trying to pull, but it surely wasn't french.- Subtitles not recommended for grammar nazis. You'd have a burnout before the end of the first conversation.- The dialogue is really repetitive, and there's no development between the conversation you just had and the remaining dialogue options. It's like having to remind a goldfish with a 10 sec memory that someone had just died.... after they told you about it themselves.- The resolution was stuck on HIDEOUS, alt + tab crashes the game and you're most probably going to encounter some peculiar species of bugs that should and hopefully are now enxtinct in more modern games. So what did I like about it?First game where I actually got to use the good old newspaper/key-on-lock-method. In all seriousness, if you want a good murder mystery point&click, get Cognition instead.. This game has a nice atmosphere, a decent music and a good synchronisation. It´s a pity, that it´s pretty buggy and it has a lot of logical mistakes. For example you have some information in your speaking option related to a subject you haven´t even discovered so far. Or the saving will break, when you discover certain things in a "wrong order".. I can barely play this game. It keeps glitching and closing in mid gameplay. It seems like a cool idea, I like detective mysteries , but this is making it difficult with it shutting down. Any recommendations? None of my other games have done this.. Before playing this game I did some research in the reviews and went into it with very low expectations. I found myself enjoying the game a bit more than I thought I would have, though I do strongly reccomend using a walkthrough while playing otherwise you'll just end up frustrated and confused most of the time. The graphics are bad, but not nearly as bad as I thought they would be, the voice acting could have been better, but it is certainly not the worst I've experienced ( Here's looking at you A New Beginning), there is some slow parts, but the ambiance is really nice and I don't regret that I bought it, even if it was on sale for dirt cheap and in a package deal. I hear the two sequels are much better installments so I look forward to more polished logical game with those.. Tedious with little interaction is the best way I can describe this. Point-and-Click adventure games are a guilty pleasure of mine so I'm no stranger to the concept however this game tested even my patience. On a side note, since it's a dated title it may not run well with certain hardware/software confgurations. There are workarounds, to be sure but it's noteworthy that Meridian4 tech support failed to respond after multiple help requests over the course of an entire month. Personally I will not be delivering any more funds into their pockets on principle alone.. I recommend this game, but with some reservations.tl;dr: A solid experience, especially for Still Life fans, but beware of the technical difficulties. My opinion is a bit skewed, because I first played the game when I was younger and really enjoyed it at the time. It was the first adventure game I had completed 100% by myself and felt very proud about it! I had found the story engaging and the atmosphere accordingly suitable.Fast forward 15 years later, it seems my mind spins in a different direction and had to consult a guide in a few bits. Still, the various puzzles make perfect sense, but I mostly didn't have the same patience to solve them by myself. I think the story pretty much holds its own and I never felt lost as to what happens next or what to do. The game even provides you with alternate paths to approach the story, either in the places you visit or the dialogues you choose. (And has 3 different endings!)A minor inconvenience is the resolution, which is stuck at 800x600 and in some scenes it's ok, and in others it's a strain for the eyes! :)But my only major qualm, and a reason to not recommend the game is that Steam offers it "as-is". On my laptop (at least), with Winows 10, the game "as-is" does not start. The obvious solution is to "wrap" it with dgVoodoo (or any other DirectX emulator, if there is one). Well, with the latest version of dgVoodoo the game didn't start, with an older one the game started but the hotspots were pitch black and couldn't solve puzzles, and about half-way through I decided to try another random version, that turned out it worked fine! Phew! Well, in all honesty, that's not a way to sell a game. Why couldn't these games come pre-packed with a DirectX wrapper, like even older adventures are with ScummVM or DosBox?
